Nombu Kanji

Nombu Kanji is famous among South Indians during their Ramzan fast. Nombu kanji Recipe is made for Iftar and is distributed in all Mosques across Tamilnadu during the holy month of Ramzan or Ramadan. It’s very tasty and you can prepare both veg or nonveg version of it.

Preparation Method For Nombu Kanji

  1. Wash ¾ cup rice and ¼ cup moong dal in enough water. Now add 2 cups of water and ¼ Thillai’s Fenugreek seeds to the rice. Soak it for at least 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Now add 2 teaspoon oil and 1 teaspoon ghee in IP(Instant Pot), when it is hot add ½ teaspoon Thillai’s Cumin seeds, ¼ teaspoon Thillai’s Fennel seeds, ½ inch cinnamon stick, and 4 Thillai’s Clove.
  3. When aromatic add chopped 1 onion and 2 green chilli. Saute well. When onions are translucent add ½ teaspoon ginger garlic paste and saute well.
  4. Now add chopped ¼ teaspoon mint, ¼ teaspoon coriander, 2 tablespoon tomato and 1 carrot. Saute well.
  5. After a minute if sauteeing add ½ minced chicken, ¼ teaspoon Thillai’s Erode Turmeric Powder, ½ Teaspoon Thillai’s Unjha Cumin Powder and ½ teaspoon Thillai’s Garam Masala Powder. Saute well.
  6. After 2 minutes of sauteeing add soaked rice, moong dal and fenugreek seeds. Add 4 cups of water. Add salt and switch off Saute mode and pressure cook for 6 minutes on high. After 6 minutes do natural release.
  7. When the kanji is done mash it well, switch on saute mode to it add 1 tablespoon grated coconut and water if required to get soupy consistency. After 2 minutes switch off the flame.

Serve the hot and traditional Nombu Kanji.
